Joan Burton TD, Welcomes Funding For Cycle Ways Throughout Dublin West

Joan Burton TD, welcomes a series of significant funding announcements that will benefit the people and communities of Dublin West. Commenting on the announcement today Joan said ” I welcome this initiative to get people “on their bikes”. Whether it is for commuting, getting to school, or simply keeping fit, these new cycle lanes will help the cyclists of Dublin West to get to their destination by the safest possible route”.

Two of the major projects to receive funding are the Ongar Cycle Network and the Royal Canal Cycle Scheme, to the sum of €1.25 million. The Ongar Cycle Network will receive €550,000 and will see the construction of a pedestrian crossing at the west end of Old Hansfield Road; pedestrian/cyclist facilities along western side of Hansfield Road; access to Scoil Pobail Setanta, the Phibblestown Centre from North West. Also the Littlepace/Castaheany, Rosedale/Hazelbury, Manorfields and Blackwood/Ongar roundabouts will be redesigned to improve cyclist and pedestrian movement.

The Royal Canal Cycle Way will be allocated €750,000 and will see the re construction of the existing canal towpath to a high quality route suitable for both walking and cycling between Blanchardstown (12th Lock) and Ashtown. Additional funding of €100,000, will see the Royal Canal Cycle Way continue on to Phibsborough.

Another significant project to receive funding is the Blanchardstown to Phoenix Park Cycle Way which has been allocated €120,000. This project will design and develop a strategic cycle route from Blanchardstown to Dublin City, including the Main Street Blanchardstown, Castleknock Road, including approaches, and links to surrounding areas, continuing to the junction with Phoenix Park.

The Hollytown area has also received funding for the Construction of new bus stops at Hollystown associated with new bus services.

Welcoming the funding, Joan said “it is important to maintain and develop recreational and sporting facilities and services in communities.  Dublin West has a proud tradition of walking clubs, cycling enthusiasts and many outdoor pursuits, I hope that these new cycle ways will facilitate and contribute to these traditions.”
