JOAN BURTON TD
TANAISTE AND LEADER OF THE LABOUR PARTY
Will host a Public Forum on the
MARRIAGE EQUALITY REFERENDUM
Thursday 28th April at 8:00 pm
Senator Katherine Zappone,
John Lyons TD.
There will be a Referendum on Friday May 22nd to allow an extra sentence to be added to the Marriage article of the Constitution to permit gay and lesbian couples to contract a civil marriage.
3 Reasons to Vote YES:
1. Equality: Marriage Equality is about treating everyone as equal in our Constitution.
2. Marriage Equality will create a more inclusive, diverse and fairer Ireland for all our people.
3. Marriage Equality is about respect for all individuals, couples and families in every part of Ireland.
Joan Burton TD says:
“I believe Ireland should recognise same-sex marriages. It would be a strong confirmation of our nation’s commitment to equal rights.
Marriage is a cherished institution in our culture. People of all faiths and none, supporters of all parties and none, are united in this common belief that marriage is a basic building block of our society.
We encourage couples to marry because the vows they make to one another offers advantages to themselves but are also tremendously beneficial to the whole community.
Marriage obliges each partner to think beyond his or her own needs.
Marriage converts two individuals into a union based on mutual care, shared ambitions and hopes. That alone is a great contribution to the general well-being of society. I rejoice in the idea that people who happen to be gay or lesbian want to participate in this vital social institution. It is something we ought to be support, celebrate and recognise. For that reason I do urge you to Vote YES in the Referendum on May 22nd.”
