Update: Pelletstown Educate Together National School

This morning, I visited Pelletstown ETNS and met with representatives of both the School and parents. We had a long discussion in respect of how to progress the building of the permanent school.

I raised this matter in the Dáil earlier this week with the Minister for Education and you can read the Minister’s full reply below. In his response you will read that the procurement process for the school is ongoing and is expected to be completed by March 2020. It is anticipated that the construction of the school will commence between April and June 2020, and it is planned to have the permanent school ready by the end of 2020 or early in 2021.

This causes an obvious problem in that the School’s arrangement in terms of the temporary location will run out in the summer of 2020. I am urging both the Taoiseach and the Minister for Education to ensure that the arrangements for the use of the current site will continue until the new School is built. It would also be disappointing if the two specific ASD classes that were promised by the Department for Education would have to be postponed because the new building will not be ready as expected.

I will do my best as your public representative, in conjunction with all other public representatives, to advance this project and will continue to raise it with both the Taoiseach and the Minister for Education. If you have any further queries in relation to this, please feel free to contact me.

When asked about the progress on a permanent school building for Pelletstown ETNS, the Minister for Education responded:

The procurement process for a bundle of projects is due to commence in the coming weeks with the publication of a contract notice to determine a shortlist of interested contractors.  The new school building for the school referred to by the Deputy is part of this bundle of projects.

The procurement process (and the associated tendering to short-listed contractors) for this bundle of projects will be ongoing during Q4 2019 and Q1 2020.

It is anticipated that construction of this school building project will commence in Q2 2020. A phased construction programme is planned to facilitate occupation of the new permanent school building by end 2020/early 2021.

My Department is well aware of the urgency of this project and the issues in relation to it’s current temporary location and will be working with the school authorities in relation to solutions for same.
